Traveling devotedly from player-coach to family-coach southbound I-75 beginning to end one enduring swell turning breaker towards latent shoreline trope; jackets off, shades on surfs up, windows down singing the final miles of the 24-hour drive groggily piling out to his sister's door. The tide of rolling recollections include his nephew quite young sorting out ambitions from the batter's box stomping away in the West Palm Beach sun from the machine-pitch monstrosity throwing helmet down to sniffles of surrender to flail away no more at the ever-growing velocity. Within hours his two hands caress the transition from aluminum handle to wooden fretboard where, unlike his uncle, clutching a phantom heirloom, he never seems frustrated trying to capture an F-Major chord (or even an A-minor 9th) or eventual tour dates with packed van & quarter-full rooms. So many spring breaks later, after gaining weight, insight & renewed appreciation for clouded kindred miracles, a creaky father retells a cousin's musical trek the trading of dreams behind his teenager’s practice swings grinning at the belching fast-pitch awaiting his turn on life, on deck.
Those all important familial relationships! I have so many memories of my grandparents and the slew of aunts, uncles and cousins who were a huge part of my life.
Most of them are gone now but the time we spent together and the love I got from them is still there.
I'm glad you were able to have a close relationship with your nephew all those years. 💗
